The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported a 10.2% increase in total car sales this September, masking a profound shift in consumer preference. While battery electric vehicles (BEVs) saw sales jump by 60% and plug-in hybrids rose by 24%, gasoline and diesel registrations plummeted by 20.6% and 28.2% respectively. This trend has persisted throughout 2026, with gasoline market share in the EU falling to 21.2%, down significantly from 27.7% the previous year.
France led the downturn in gasoline vehicle demand with a 36.1% drop, followed by Germany at 22.7%, Spain at 19%, and Italy at 16.4%. Amid this transition, Chinese manufacturers are capturing significant momentum; BYD saw its EU sales more than double, while the Chery Automobile portfolio—including Jaecoo, Jetour, and Omoda—tripled its volume. According to Transport & Environment, the combination of high fuel costs and an influx of affordable electric models has propelled EV adoption to an all-time high this year.
