Iran’s Floating Oil Reserves Evaporate Under U.S. Naval Pressure

With Iranian oil stocks in floating storage plummeting to just 866,000 barrels by mid-October, the U.S. naval blockade has effectively choked off the country’s primary export lifeline to China. This rapid depletion marks a drastic reversal from the 150 million barrels held in reserve before the initial April restrictions.

The collapse in available supply follows a volatile cycle of brief diplomatic reprieves and renewed hostilities. After a mid-June ceasefire allowed stocks to fluctuate, the breakdown of negotiations in July triggered a return to strict enforcement. Homayoun Falakshahi, lead crude analyst at Kpler, noted the exhaustion of discharge options for Chinese buyers, suggesting the U.S. is betting that economic strangulation will either force Tehran back to the nuclear negotiating table or ignite domestic instability.

Washington faces its own political fallout from the strategy. High fuel costs, particularly for diesel, have weighed on President Trump’s approval ratings ahead of the November midterms, while Moody’s estimates the total economic cost of the conflict for U.S. households has reached $265 billion. Despite these pressures, the Central Bank of Iran maintains that its economy remains resilient, dismissing collapse narratives as illusory. With Iranian leadership signaling deep distrust toward Washington, the path to renewed diplomacy remains largely obstructed.
