Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at StoneX, identifies August 19 as the pivotal moment for this trend. The Treasury Department’s announcement regarding increased buybacks for long-dated government bonds acted as a catalyst, propelling Bitcoin from $65,000 to its recent highs. During this window, U.S. Bitcoin ETFs attracted $4.6 billion in net inflows, cementing a 44% gain for the quarter. In contrast, gold has managed only an 8% increase, hampered by the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset while the Federal Reserve signals a hawkish stance on interest rates.
Despite the disparity in performance, Cincotta emphasizes that investors are not abandoning gold. Global gold ETF demand remains near record levels, yet the macro environment currently yields higher marginal returns for Bitcoin. The Bitcoin-to-gold ratio has climbed to 19.89, the highest point this year, signaling that one Bitcoin now commands nearly 20 ounces of gold. Moving forward, market participants are watching for a sustained break above $87,000, which would set the stage for a push toward the $100,000 psychological threshold.
