Gold Stumbles as Bond Yields Climb Toward Two-Decade Highs

With U.S. 10-year Treasury yields pushing past 5.15%, gold faces a punishing environment that shows little sign of immediate reversal. As bond markets slump, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets has surged, forcing analysts to warn that the precious metal may have significant room to fall further.

Gold Stumbles as Bond Yields Climb Toward Two-Decade Highs

Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at FOREX.com, points to a confluence of technical and fundamental headwinds. Elevated oil prices are stoking inflation fears, cementing market expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain a hawkish stance. The CME FedWatch Tool currently reflects a 56% probability of a 50-basis-point rate hike this December, a prospect that has sent 30-year yields testing levels not seen since 2007.

Beyond the macroeconomic pressure, the technical picture for gold remains fragile. Razaqzada notes that the metal has been trapped in a bearish consolidation pattern since January, characterized by a series of lower highs and lower lows. Traders who entered long positions during the August rally now face significant risk, with many stop-loss orders resting just below recent support levels. A breach of the $4,235 mark could trigger a cascade of liquidations, potentially dragging prices toward $4,100 and eventually the $4,000 threshold.

While the current outlook remains grim, sentiment in the financial markets remains fluid. A sudden erosion of confidence in the Federal Reserve’s ability to anchor inflation could revive the dollar debasement narrative, providing a potential lifeline for gold, silver, and bitcoin. For now, however, the technical barrier is firm: Razaqzada maintains that he will not pivot to a bullish stance until gold decisively clears the $4,400 resistance level on a closing basis.
