Seller Impersonation Fraud Attempts More Than Double in Two Years

The American Land Title Association’s 2026 study reveals that scammers are moving beyond vacant land to target vacation homes, rental properties, and primary residences. These criminals are leveraging modern technology to bypass traditional safeguards, with 87% of surveyed firms noting the use of spoofed contact information, while 58% pointed to the emergence of deepfake audio and visual tools.

When these efforts succeed, the financial toll is significant. One in four firms that encountered an attempt reported a paid claim, with half of those claims exceeding $100,000. In response, title professionals are adopting a multi-layered defense strategy. Currently, 94% of companies utilize a combination of identity verification and authentication tools, averaging 5.3 distinct detection methods per firm to intercept fraudulent transactions before they close.
