Volvo Targets Heavy Haulage With 80-Tonne Electric Truck

The vehicle represents a significant shift for markets like Sweden and Finland, where heavy transport loads frequently exceed European averages. At a gross combination weight of 64 tonnes, the truck achieves a range of up to 450 kilometers on a single charge. When pushing to 76 tonnes, that figure holds at 420 kilometers. Jan Hjelmgren, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, noted that the combination of high payload capacity and fast-charging capabilities is intended to make zero-emission transport a viable economic choice for heavy industry.

Technical updates underpin this performance, including an improved powertrain and 640 kWh of usable energy. Volvo has integrated a new battery monitoring system and enhanced insulation specifically for colder climates, ensuring efficiency remains stable in northern regions. The truck also debuts hub-reduction axles, which provide better ground clearance and starting torque—features essential for timber transport or construction work. The rollout begins in early 2027, with initial availability spanning Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
