Threads of Time: Preserving the Intricate Art of Suzhou Kesi

In a display of cultural preservation, Lexar and Leica have unveiled an exhibition at the Leica Gallery Amsterdam that captures the meticulous world of Suzhou kesi. The project pairs award-winning photographer Jing Huang with artisan Hao Naiqiang, documenting the slow, thread-by-thread evolution of traditional Chinese silk weaving.

Threads of Time: Preserving the Intricate Art of Suzhou Kesi

The exhibition, titled Threads of Time, moves away from viewing craftsmanship as a static heritage object. Instead, it focuses on the rhythm of the loom, the tension of the silk, and the quiet discipline required to create patterns that cannot be replicated by modern automation. Jing Huang’s photography emphasizes this restraint, utilizing a visual language inspired by Chinese ink painting to document the gestures and studio environment that define Jingwei’s practice.

For the partners involved, the exhibition serves as a meditation on the intersection of human presence and digital longevity. While Leica provides the lens to witness the artisan’s work, Lexar highlights the role of storage in protecting the original files that constitute our cultural memory. By framing these images within a gallery space, the project challenges the viewer to consider the value of authentic, captured moments in an era where synthetic imagery is increasingly prevalent. The show remains open to the public, offering a rare look at the invisible labor behind a centuries-old craft.
