Willamette Valley Vineyards Swings to Loss Amid Distributor Bankruptcy

The bankruptcy of a major distribution partner has pushed Willamette Valley Vineyards into the red, with the Oregon-based winery reporting a net loss of $1.39 million for the second quarter of 2026. The financial setback, driven by credit losses, marks a sharp decline from the $92,795 profit recorded during the same period last year.

The company’s quarterly results reveal a mounting pressure on operations, characterized by a 22.5% surge in administrative expenses to $7.13 million. This spike stems primarily from the insolvency of the Republic National Distributing Company, leaving the winery with significant unrecovered debts. Revenue also saw a slight contraction, dipping 1.6% to $10.04 million, as a decline in direct outpost sales outpaced modest gains through other distribution channels.

Founder and President Jim Bernau acknowledged the heavy impact of the distributor's collapse on the company's cash flow. While the winery is currently working to train new distribution partners to stabilize operations, retail performance provided a minor buffer. According to Bernau, the drop in overall customer visits at tasting rooms was largely neutralized by an increase in per-customer spending during the quarter. Despite these efforts to manage internal costs, the loss per common share widened to $0.40, compared to $0.09 in the second quarter of 2025.
