Gold rallies on labor market cooling as inflation tests remain

Gold has surged 7% this week to trade at $4,344 an ounce, fueled by a sharp contraction in U.S. employment data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a loss of 23,000 jobs in July, a figure that drastically missed expectations and prompted markets to slash the probability of a September interest rate hike.

Gold rallies on labor market cooling as inflation tests remain

The precious metal’s breakout follows two months of consolidation near the $4,000 support level, marking its strongest weekly performance of the year. While the labor market's cooling has provided immediate momentum, analysts remain cautious about the path toward $4,500. The Federal Reserve continues to prioritize inflation control, and upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) data will serve as the next major hurdle for the rally.

Market participants are now weighing the durability of these gains against persistent inflationary pressures. Roukaya Ibrahim of BCA Research noted that while the metal remains attractive, investors should exercise patience as the Fed maintains its tightening bias. Similarly, Alex Kuptsikevich of FxPro pointed out that gold failed to breach the 50-week moving average near $4,400, suggesting that significant technical resistance lies ahead. With retail sales and additional inflation reports scheduled for the coming week, traders are bracing for heightened volatility as the market attempts to reconcile a weakening labor sector with the central bank’s hawkish policy stance.
