Dr. Gemme, who joined Baystate’s Department of Emergency Medicine in 2017, moves into this expanded leadership role following his tenure as Chair of Emergency Medicine for both Baystate Health and UMass Chan Medical School–Baystate. Peter D. Banko, President and CEO of Baystate Health, noted that Gemme’s background in both clinical practice and administrative oversight makes him uniquely qualified to drive the system’s mission of improving patient access and care quality. His previous contributions include designing the Vertical Model of Care at Baystate Medical Center and developing real-time surge tools to optimize emergency department patient flow.
In his new capacity, Gemme will oversee physician-led transformation across the enterprise, focusing on safety, clinical throughput, and system-wide accountability. His academic and professional credentials include a medical degree from the University at Buffalo, residency training at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, and an ongoing MBA program at UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management. A former recipient of Modern Healthcare’s 40 Under 40 award, Gemme will now act as a primary advisor to the executive leadership team, tasked with fostering a culture of transparency as the system continues to serve over 800,000 residents across the region.
