Virologist Clinton Jones Recognized for Excellence in Microbiology

The Inner Circle has named Dr. Clinton Jimmie Jones a Pinnacle Professional Member, honoring his decades of foundational research in virology. A Sitlington Professor at Oklahoma State University, Jones is recognized for shifting the scientific understanding of how herpesviruses persist and reactivate within both human and animal hosts.

Virologist Clinton Jones Recognized for Excellence in Microbiology

Since joining Oklahoma State University in 2015, Jones has directed studies on viral pathogenesis and DNA viruses. His work at the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences builds upon a career that challenged long-standing biological assumptions. During his tenure at the University of Nebraska between 1989 and 2015, his team discovered that non-neuronal cells, such as those in tonsils, can harbor latent herpesviruses—a departure from the traditional view that the virus resided solely in sensory neurons.

His research has significant implications for the cattle industry, particularly regarding bovine herpesvirus 1. By mapping how stress-induced immunosuppression affects susceptibility to bacterial pneumonia, his laboratory has provided critical data for vaccine development. These contributions earned him a spot on the 2025 Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List and the 2018 Outstanding Researcher Award from Zoetis Services LLC.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Jones has spent decades shaping national research priorities through his service on NIH and USDA review panels. He currently focuses on the intersection of latent viral infections and neuroinflammation, exploring how these mechanisms influence long-term neurological health. Beyond his laboratory output, Jones emphasizes the role of mentorship, crediting the success of his research to the graduate students and postdoctoral fellows he has guided throughout his career.
