Canada and Japan Forge Strategic Minerals Alliance to Bypass China

Canada and Japan are weighing a joint initiative to stockpile critical metals and co-develop mining projects, seeking to dismantle China’s control over the global supply chain. Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu confirmed the discussions following a diplomatic mission that secured over C$1 billion in new commercial agreements between the nations.

The proposed collaboration aims to secure materials vital to the defense, automotive, and clean energy sectors. During a recent delegation visit, Canadian officials pitched expanded mineral partnerships to Japanese firms, building on existing ties like the LNG Canada Phase 1 project. Mitsubishi is currently exploring an increased role in these energy exports, signaling a broader shift toward bilateral resource integration.

This move aligns with the G7’s recent strategic alliance, which explicitly targets the diversification of supply chains to mitigate the impact of non-market policies and arbitrary export restrictions. While the G7 declaration avoids naming Beijing directly, the focus remains on neutralizing economic coercion by developing independent processing and industrial capacities among member states and their partners.
