Africa Launches $5 Billion Energy Bank to Counter Funding Drought

With 600 million people lacking electricity and Western capital retreating, the African Export-Import Bank and the African Petroleum Producers' Organisation have launched a $5 billion energy bank. This new institution aims to secure the continent's oil and gas projects as energy demand is projected to triple over the next decade.

Africa Launches $5 Billion Energy Bank to Counter Funding Drought

The continent faces a severe energy trilemma, struggling to balance reliability, affordability, and sustainability while its population prepares to double by 2050. Projections from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre indicate that power generation capacity must increase ten-fold by 2065 to keep pace with growth. Despite holding 60 percent of the world’s solar potential, Africa currently hosts only 1 percent of global solar production capacity. Promised climate funding from wealthy nations has largely failed to materialize, leaving a vacuum that private capital has been slow to fill.

While the $5 billion initial capitalization is a fraction of the $200 billion annual investment estimated by the Independent Petroleum Producers Group, it marks a shift toward African-led financing. Oil and gas investments on the continent dropped from $68 billion in 2016 to approximately $37 billion in 2025, forcing a reliance on local resources to prevent deepening energy poverty. Analysts suggest that the bank will prioritize the most bankable initiatives, though the challenge remains to convert the region's vast natural resources into actionable, financeable projects that can sustain industrialization and economic development.
