Gold and Silver Slip as Robust Labor Data Fuels Rate Hike Bets

Spot gold and silver prices retreated in late U.S. trading Tuesday, pressured by unexpectedly strong labor market data and factory orders that pushed Treasury yields higher. As voters headed to the polls for the midterm elections, investors recalibrated their expectations for further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.

Gold and Silver Slip as Robust Labor Data Fuels Rate Hike Bets

The latest economic indicators point to surprising resilience in the U.S. economy, complicating the outlook for monetary policy. September job openings climbed to 7.523 million, comfortably exceeding forecasts, while factory orders grew by 1.8%. These figures, coupled with a manufacturing purchasing managers' index of 55.5, suggest that the labor market remains robust enough to withstand restrictive interest rates. Consequently, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.951%, sapping the appeal of non-yielding precious metals.

Market sentiment remains caught between these economic signals and the uncertainty surrounding the midterm elections. While a divided Congress could potentially limit future fiscal spending, traders are also navigating ongoing geopolitical risks in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite recent military tensions near Iran, crude oil prices moved lower, offering little inflationary support for gold. Spot gold finished the session at $3,924.10 an ounce, while silver dropped 2.13% to $49.450, as investors braced for the congressional balance of power and upcoming employment reports.
