The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) released 400,000 barrels last week to bolster commercial supplies, leaving the reserve at 282.2 million barrels. This figure sits perilously close to the 250-million-barrel minimum threshold required for efficient processing. Despite this aggressive draw-down, domestic output remains robust, with production reaching 13.992 million barrels per day for the week ending October 23—a significant jump from the previous week's 13.269 million.
Market reactions to these supply shifts have been muted. Brent crude traded at $104.32 on Wednesday, down roughly $10 from the previous week, while WTI hovered at $97.24. Inventory data remains mixed across sectors: gasoline stocks increased by 1.427 million barrels, whereas distillates fell by 270,000 barrels, deepening their deficit relative to the five-year average. At the Cushing delivery hub, stocks saw a slight recovery, gaining 511,000 barrels after a period of consistent decline.
