Eni Profits Surge 125% Amid Refining Margin Windfall

A dramatic spike in refining margins, coupled with a 4% increase in oil and gas production, has propelled Eni to a $3.14 billion third-quarter profit. The Italian energy giant’s earnings more than doubled year-over-year, handily beating analyst expectations and triggering a significant expansion of investor payouts.

Eni Profits Surge 125% Amid Refining Margin Windfall

The company’s refining and chemicals division emerged as a primary engine for this growth, generating $529 million in earnings compared to losses during the same period last year. This turnaround was bolstered by the Standard Eni Refining Margin, which climbed to $28.1 per barrel from $8.9 a year ago. While higher shipping costs and crude grade differentials provided some resistance, the surge in plant utilization rates proved decisive for the bottom line.

Bolstered by this cash flow, which rose 30% over the previous year, Eni is deploying a $1.46 billion extraordinary dividend scheduled for December. The firm is also elevating its share buyback program by 12%, bringing the total allocation to $4.26 billion. This marks the third time this year the company has revised its repurchase plans upward, reflecting confidence in its full-year trajectory. Eni’s performance serves as a precursor to upcoming reports from European peers like Shell and BP, all of which are expected to capitalize on similar commodity market conditions.
