The expansion of data centers, industrial output, and cooling requirements has forced analysts to revise energy demand forecasts upward by 15% compared to last year. While the transition to cleaner power is underway, the path remains uneven. Solar and wind projects are slated to absorb $300 billion annually, yet execution is faltering. Between 2021 and 2025, over half of all renewable projects in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia were stalled or canceled due to inadequate grid infrastructure and inconsistent policy frameworks.
Fossil fuels continue to play a foundational role in the regional energy mix. Coal consumption is expected to remain flat as declines in China are neutralized by rising usage in India and Southeast Asia. Simultaneously, nations are pivoting toward domestic oil and gas development in places like the Philippines and Turkmenistan to insulate themselves from volatile import markets. With the Strait of Hormuz remaining a critical and vulnerable artery, the race for energy security now pits traditional fuel infrastructure against the urgent, capital-intensive need for renewables and biofuels.
