Strait of Hormuz Stalemate Drives European Gas Prices Higher

Benchmark Dutch TTF gas futures climbed 2.15% to 73.62 euros on Monday, reversing a 9% slide from the previous week. The rally follows a breakdown in U.S.-Iran diplomatic talks, fueling investor anxiety over potential disruptions to liquefied natural gas shipments transiting the critical Strait of Hormuz.

The volatility underscores the vulnerability of European energy markets as winter approaches with historically depleted reserves. While the European Commission maintains that supply remains stable, storage levels paint a more precarious picture. Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows EU facilities at 71% capacity, trailing the 80% average seen over the past five years.

Germany faces the most acute pressure, with reserves sitting at just 57%. Although some Qatari and UAE shipments have navigated the strait, volumes remain insufficient to offset the global supply squeeze. The tension escalated over the weekend when the U.S. rejected an Iranian proposal for a peace deal, an event that rippled through global energy markets and pushed oil prices up by 2% in early Asian trading.
