Crowns in Bloom: New York Exhibition Reimagines Hair as Fine Art

Curated by Auttrianna Ward, the exhibition occupies a space at 526 West 26th Street, moving beyond traditional salon aesthetics to position hair as a core element of visual language. The collection is organized into four thematic pillars: Hair as Medium, Hair as Play, Hair as Landscape, and Hair as Ritual. By presenting photography, sculpture, film, and painting, the show interrogates how hair is sculpted, braided, and adorned across diverse cultural contexts.

The roster of featured talent includes Mickalene Thomas, Malick Sidibé, Torkwase Dyson, Deborah Willis, and Akinola Davies Jr. Their contributions are joined by the work of Vernon François, a stylist from amika’s Stylist Circle, who bridges the gap between professional salon artistry and the fine art world. According to Chelsea Riggs, CEO of amika, the goal is to frame hair not merely as a style choice, but as a sophisticated cultural marker and a narrative tool. The exhibition remains open to the public daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, offering a platform for artists to explore the boundaries of self-expression.
