Brad Nielsen, president of Iowa American Water, notes that safeguarding water at the source is the most effective way to ensure long-term reliability. The company’s strategy involves rigorous monitoring and collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to tackle emerging contaminants and seasonal hazards, such as harmful algae blooms on the Mississippi River. By maintaining advanced treatment protocols at the Davenport facility, the utility mitigates quality fluctuations before they reach the consumer tap.

Beyond technical infrastructure, the company advocates for community involvement to prevent runoff contamination. Ted Kratschmer, the utility’s source water protection manager, stresses that protecting the supply is a collective responsibility. He urges residents to adopt sustainable habits, including the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals, minimizing chemical use on lawns, and keeping storm drains clear of waste. With nearly 1 million annual tests performed across its research laboratories, the company continues to focus on maintaining water safety for its 225,000 customers in Iowa.
