Fortress Group Unveils Modular SMART ILA Infrastructure

Legacy amplifier shelters frequently struggle with modern power demands and fiber counts, often locking operators into rigid footprints for a decade. The NextGen SMART ILA addresses this by engineering the building around the optical line and thermal requirements. The initial low-density module supports 144–288 fibers within a standard 8 ft by 40 ft ISO container, providing 10 relay racks and independent N+1 cooling. Fortress plans to follow this with high-density modules capable of supporting up to 864 fibers, with total facility loads scaling from 83.5 kW to 406 kW.

Beyond physical hardware, the platform integrates mobile-first site management software. This system replaces manual spreadsheets and physical keys with a digital interface for secure access, vendor tracking, and real-time facility control. Fortress claims the architecture can deliver up to 5X PUE savings and 3X equipment capacity compared to traditional builds. The company intends to showcase the operational units during an invite-only event this October, where they will reveal further details on power topology and high-density fiber management strategies.
