The "Make Dismissal History" campaign arrives as data reveals a deep-seated crisis in women's healthcare. A survey of 1,493 U.S.-based users found that 53% felt their symptoms were not taken seriously, leading 69% of those individuals to postpone professional medical consultations. The problem is compounded by a lack of traditional medical guidance; 69% of respondents admitted they rely more on social media for perimenopause information than on registered healthcare professionals.
To bridge this knowledge gap, Flo is temporarily removing its paywall for the Perimenopause suite, including the Peri Score and symptom tracking tools. This move is designed to provide patients with a structured history of their own health, countering the tendency for practitioners to dismiss midlife concerns as natural decline. Dr. Sameena Rahman, a medical advisor for the app, notes that practitioners frequently avoid investigative work in favor of generalizations, leaving patients without answers.
Complementing the digital tools, Flo has installed public art in New York City's SoHo, West Village, and Williamsburg neighborhoods. These displays trace the historical path of medical bias, from the ancient concept of the "wandering womb" to 1950s tropes of the "hysterical housewife." By connecting these historical labels to modern clinical experiences, the campaign aims to validate the experiences of women who have long been discouraged from trusting their own physical narratives.
