US Diesel Costs Surge to Record $6.50 Per Gallon

American diesel prices hit an unprecedented $6.5050 per gallon this weekend, marking a sharp one-dollar increase over the past month. This rapid climb reflects a tightening global fuel supply and sustained crude benchmarks, intensifying pressure on a domestic economy already grappling with persistent inflationary headwinds.

US Diesel Costs Surge to Record $6.50 Per Gallon

The national average for diesel climbed from $5.5477 just four weeks ago, shattering records set earlier in 2022. Gasoline prices are mirroring this upward trend, currently averaging $4.4761 per gallon, compared to $3.1894 at this time last year. These costs are increasingly central to political discourse ahead of November's midterm elections.

Economic observers remain focused on the broader implications of these energy costs. While Federal Reserve officials have acknowledged that inflation remains elevated, the outlook for growth is mixed. Goldman Sachs recently adjusted its recession forecast, lowering the probability of a downturn within the next year from 30% to 15%, citing the unexpected resilience of the U.S. economy despite ongoing supply chain disruptions. However, chief economist Jan Hatzius warned that any further external shocks could quickly reverse these projections.
