Middle East Tensions Drive European Gas Prices to 20-Month Highs

Escalating hostilities in the Middle East have pushed European natural gas benchmarks toward their fourth consecutive weekly gain, as concerns over persistent disruptions to LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz trigger a frantic scramble for supply ahead of the critical winter heating season.

Middle East Tensions Drive European Gas Prices to 20-Month Highs

The Dutch Title Transfer Facility front-month price is tracking a 7% weekly increase, reaching levels not seen since January 2023. Markets remain on edge as the prospect of blocked maritime chokepoints tightens global availability, forcing Europe and Asia into direct competition for a diminishing pool of flexible cargoes. Storage levels across the continent currently sit at some of the lowest points recorded in the last two decades.

Analysts at ING warn that the widening spread between the JKM and TTF benchmarks complicates trade flows, as it remains uncertain whether suppliers will prioritize European delivery over higher-priced Asian spot markets. Should Qatari exports remain constrained through the end of the year, the resulting scramble for fuel could intensify significantly. Kpler analyst Go Katayama emphasized that a colder-than-expected winter would likely exacerbate this global fight for energy, further straining an already fragile supply chain.
