Edinburgh International Festival Marks 250 Years of American History

Under the direction of violinist Nicola Benedetti, the festival features its largest-ever contingent of American artists. The lineup includes performances by the San Francisco Ballet, the LA Phil, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. For the latter, the appearance holds particular significance as Wynton Marsalis prepares to conclude his four-decade tenure as the ensemble’s founding artistic director. The program spans 147 performances across the city, weaving together international talent with over 700 Scottish artists, including the world premiere of Scottish Opera’s The Galloping Cure.

The Legacy Museum, based in Montgomery, Alabama, has brought its first international exhibition to the University of Edinburgh’s Playfair Library. This free presentation by the Equal Justice Initiative explores the history and legacy of slavery in the United States, encouraging audiences to confront complex narratives. Benedetti describes the festival as a space to meet such themes with curiosity, inviting attendees to gather and imagine differently over the three-week duration.
