China Deepens Economic Foothold Across Central Asia

Beijing is aggressively expanding its infrastructure and industrial footprint across Central Asia, marked by the steady construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway and a flurry of new agreements spanning green energy, autonomous transport, and academic cooperation that solidify the region's role in China’s evolving economic orbit.

China Deepens Economic Foothold Across Central Asia

The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project, a cornerstone of Beijing's regional strategy, is hitting key milestones. With work advancing on 28 of 29 planned tunnels and most bridge foundations nearing completion, the 530-kilometer link remains on track for a 2031 launch. Beyond rail, China’s industrial presence is diversifying: Kazakhstan is seeing substantial investment in solar power and urban development, including an $800 million complex in Alatau City. Meanwhile, tech partnerships are emerging, such as the potential deployment of Pony.ai robotaxis in Astana.

Energy and chemical sectors are also central to this expansion. From the cold commissioning of a calcium chloride unit in Kazakhstan to the construction of a 500 MW wind plant in Uzbekistan, Chinese firms are securing major roles in modernizing local infrastructure. Education and security ties are deepening in tandem, with new agreements covering everything from vocational training in Turkmenistan to joint law enforcement protocols at the Khorgos border hub. These moves reflect a broad effort to integrate Central Asian markets into the Chinese supply chain while establishing long-term institutional influence.
