Born in Auckland in 1934, Mills overcame a difficult childhood to become a fearsome competitor in the discus and shot put. His athletic career spanned four Olympic Games and included a Commonwealth Games gold medal. Alongside his wife Colleen, he bridged the gap between elite performance and public health, opening the first Les Mills gym in 1968. This foundation eventually evolved into Les Mills International, a global powerhouse for group training.
Beyond the gym, Mills applied his trademark intensity to public service. As Mayor of Auckland during the 1990s, he spearheaded significant infrastructure projects and waterfront regeneration. His contributions to the nation were recognized with a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1973 and his appointment as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2002. His son, Phillip Mills, noted that his father’s enduring drive was rooted in a genuine desire to assist others, whether through political reform or by encouraging people to find joy in physical activity.
