Azerbaijan Pushes to Bring Turkmenistan into Middle Corridor Trade

With a flurry of new agreements signed in Baku on June 22, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkmen leader Serdar Berdymukhamedov have signaled a shift toward integrating the notoriously isolated Turkmenistan into the Middle Corridor, a burgeoning trade route designed to bridge Central Asia and European markets.

The deal focuses on harmonizing customs statistics and streamlining the technical movement of goods between the two nations. Beyond logistics, the pacts extend into agriculture, banking, and labor migration. Aliyev emphasized that the coordination is not just about bilateral trade, but about attracting cargo flows from third-party nations to bolster the regional network.

Historically a guarded "hermit" state, Turkmenistan is showing signs of seeking economic diversification beyond its traditional reliance on natural gas exports to China. This pivot toward the West and the Caucasus is further evidenced by Aliyev’s hint at a potential partnership in mining. Azerbaijan has already begun exploring similar ventures, recently signing an agreement to help Uzbekistan develop its own critical mineral value chain through the Baku-based NEQSOL Holding. An intergovernmental commission is set to meet in Ashgabat this July to turn these broad promises into actionable infrastructure projects.
