Qatar Targets LNG Export Recovery Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Qatar expects to restore normal liquefied natural gas production within weeks, provided shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz stabilize. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani confirmed that repair crews are already active, though one damaged facility at the Ras Laffan complex will remain offline for a longer period.

Qatar Targets LNG Export Recovery Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

QatarEnergy has begun mobilizing operations to restart exports following a period of force majeure triggered by mid-March missile strikes on the Ras Laffan facility. While full capacity awaits the clearance of mines and the restoration of secure transit, the state firm has informed customers that 50% of output could resume within a month of reopening the waterway, with projections for 80% capacity reaching within two months.

Addressing the ongoing maritime risks, the Prime Minister advocated for a direct communication link between Washington and Tehran. He described a dangerous environment where unauthorized actors exploit shipping radio frequencies to issue fake threats in the name of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Establishing a verified hotline would serve to authenticate distress signals and ensure tankers can navigate the chokepoint without falling victim to disinformation or intimidation. Recent tracking data shows Qatari-linked carriers are already moving toward the Persian Gulf in anticipation of a restart.
