Qatar Recalls LNG Carriers Amid Ras Laffan Repair Crisis

Three QatarEnergy liquefied gas carriers are currently steaming toward the Strait of Hormuz, signaling an urgent push to resume exports. This mobilization follows a devastating mid-March missile strike on the Ras Laffan complex, an incident that forced the state-run firm to declare force majeure and halt output.

Qatar Recalls LNG Carriers Amid Ras Laffan Repair Crisis

Shipping data reveals a cluster of at least eight Qatari-linked tankers maneuvering near the Omani coast, despite ongoing uncertainty regarding regional maritime security. QatarEnergy has signaled to customers that it aims to restore 50% of production capacity within one month, provided that safe passage through the critical waterway is guaranteed. Internal projections suggest an 80% recovery within two months, though these timelines remain contingent on the stabilization of regional conflict.

The recovery of tanker traffic is currently hostage to broader geopolitical tensions. While negotiations between the United States and Iran continue in Switzerland, the ongoing Israeli incursion into Lebanon serves as a primary friction point, complicating the resumption of normal transit for both crude oil and liquefied gas. The physical toll on the Ras Laffan complex, the world’s largest LNG facility, is severe. QatarEnergy estimates the facility’s damage will result in $20 billion of lost annual revenue and necessitate a five-year reconstruction timeline.
