Japan Set to Reclaim Title as World’s Leading LNG Importer

Japan is poised to surpass China as the world's largest importer of liquefied natural gas this year, a shift driven by cooling Chinese demand and strategic inventory management. Data from ICIS and Kpler suggests Japan will import roughly 62 million metric tons, narrowly edging out China’s expected 61 million tons.

Japan Set to Reclaim Title as World’s Leading LNG Importer

The cooling of the Chinese market stems from aggressive early stockpiling. By the end of September, Beijing had filled its underground gas storage facilities to 80% capacity, insulating the country against supply volatility linked to the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis. While China previously led the global import rankings, the current combination of high spot prices and sufficient domestic reserves has sidelined its buyers from the international market.

Japan’s return to the top spot reflects a different set of pressures. Despite shifting some power generation toward coal this summer to hedge against elevated LNG costs, Japan remains tethered to the global market as competition for non-transit cargoes intensifies. With shipments from Qatar and the UAE disrupted by regional instability, Asian spot prices have climbed to four-year highs. This shift in import leadership offers a degree of relief for other regional consumers, as China’s reduced appetite for spot supply eases the broader scramble for winter energy security in both Asia and Europe.
