Sicily Crowned 2026 International Wine Region of the Year

Wine Enthusiast has named Sicily the 2026 International Wine Region of the Year, honoring the Mediterranean island for its blend of ancient viticultural history and modern sustainable practices. The accolade, part of the 27th Annual Wine Star Awards, highlights the region's rapid evolution in quality and environmental stewardship.

The award recognizes a transformation driven by a new generation of producers who are moving beyond traditional methods to embrace ecological responsibility. Sicily currently leads Italy in organic viticulture, bolstered by the SOStain Sicilia certification program. This initiative focuses on reducing the environmental footprint of winemaking while preserving the island's diverse agricultural landscape for future generations.

Alessio Planeta, President of the Consorzio di Tutela vini DOC Sicilia, described the honor as a testament to the island's ability to fuse innovation with its deep-rooted cultural heritage. Sicily’s identity rests on its extraordinary diversity, hosting over 70 indigenous grape varieties including Nero d'Avola, Grillo, and Nerello Mascalese. Whether from the volcanic slopes of Etna or the coastal regions of Vittoria and Noto, the island’s wines are gaining international recognition for their distinct connection to place. The winners will be formally celebrated at a gala in January 2027.
