The Somerville-based startup, founded by Brown University physicist Derek Stein, developed the product using patented Vaporwisp technology. Unlike standard interior paints, Lilypad acts as a passive regulator, drawing in excess moisture during spikes—such as after a hot shower—and releasing it once air conditions stabilize. Field trials indicate the coating can lower peak indoor humidity by 15% compared to conventional finishes.
This functionality addresses a significant public health challenge, as moisture issues currently impact nearly 47% of U.S. homes and contribute to respiratory illnesses. Beyond its technical performance, the product is Green Wise Certified and free from chemicals cited in the Living Building Challenge. Following its February launch in white, the company is now rolling out The Essentials palette, featuring shades ranging from the earthy Sage & Sound to the neutral Fogline. The recognition from TIME follows a string of accolades for the material science firm, including a 2026 Innovation by Design Award from Fast Company and a Silver Edison Award.
