XBM and SiCAM Partner to Develop Domestic Silicon-Sulfur Batteries

Domestic battery manufacturing faces a supply chain bottleneck, with China controlling nearly 95% of the global market. To counter this dependence, Los Angeles-based XBM USA and SiCAM Technologies are merging their respective sulfur cathode and silicon-carbon anode innovations to build a high-energy, U.S.-sourced battery platform for eVTOLs and drones.

The partnership focuses on integrating SiCAM’s unique silicon-carbon anode with XBM’s lignin-derived lithium-sulfur cathode. While standard battery production often relies on silane in chemical vapor deposition, SiCAM utilizes chlorosilane in a fluidized-bed process. This method creates a bonded composite structure that mitigates the 300% swelling typically associated with silicon during charging cycles. By utilizing abundant domestic byproducts like sulfur from petroleum refining and lignin from paper pulping, the companies aim to bypass the expensive, foreign-controlled supply chains that currently dominate the industry.

According to Jon Shan, CTO of XBM USA, the immediate goal is to optimize these materials for high-energy-density applications, specifically lightweight eMobility. Phillip Roberts, co-founder of both firms, characterizes the collaboration as a shift toward a sustainable battery model that avoids the high costs and geopolitical risks of traditional mined chemistries. With the technology currently moving toward commercialization, the companies are positioning this silicon-sulfur platform as a leapfrog solution for U.S. OEMs.
