Truth Initiative Appoints Harvard Scientist Vaughan Rees as Research Chief

Rees brings over 25 years of experience in addiction, regulatory science, and behavioral health to the Washington-based nonprofit. At Harvard, he directed the Center for Global Tobacco Control since 2015 and managed research portfolios backed by more than $12 million in external funding. His career includes advisory roles for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization, focusing on the intersection of product regulation and public health policy.

As the organization expands its scope beyond nicotine to include cannabis, opioids, and polysubstance use, Rees is tasked with scaling the Schroeder Institute’s research capabilities. CEO Kathy Crosby noted that his interdisciplinary background is essential for applying rigorous evidence to the evolving addiction landscape. Beyond his research, Rees has a track record of mentorship, having guided over 70 doctoral and master’s students during his tenure at Harvard. He will now lead the team in translating scientific findings into evidence-based interventions for youth and young adults.
