Two Decades of Closing the Radio Silence Gap in Michigan

When a firefighter enters a burning structure, the steel and concrete walls often act as a Faraday cage, silencing the radios they rely on for survival. For twenty years, Novi-based WZC Networking has focused on eliminating these life-threatening dead zones, ensuring emergency personnel remain connected when seconds count.

Two Decades of Closing the Radio Silence Gap in Michigan

Founded in 2006 by RF engineer John Wierzgac, WZC Networking has evolved from a local startup into a benchmark for Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems. The company operates on a pragmatic philosophy: radio coverage is a life-safety necessity, not a mere permit hurdle. While energy-efficient building materials and thick, modern insulation have improved sustainability, they have simultaneously created significant signal obstacles in stairwells, basements, and internal corridors.

At the 15-story Clawson Manor senior living complex, WZC discovered that only 51 percent of the property met required signal thresholds, with coverage in egress corridors plummeting to 34 percent. Following the installation of a custom distributed antenna system, the facility achieved 100 percent pass rates across all tested grids. Similar interventions have saved high-stakes construction projects, such as the Corewell Health Endoscopy Center, where WZC provided an expedited, compliant solution that allowed the facility to open on schedule after initial tests failed to meet fire marshal standards.

Beyond installation, the firm emphasizes that compliance is a continuous obligation rather than a one-time event. Under NFPA 1225 standards, building owners must maintain ongoing testing of amplifiers, battery backups, and signal integrity. As Chief Operating Officer Nate Wierzgac notes, many developers neglect radio architecture during the design phase, leading to costly complications at the finish line. By embedding themselves in the planning process, the WZC team aims to ensure that when an emergency call is made, the signal carries through every floor.
