Vial Begins Phase 1b Asthma Trial for Long-Acting Bispecific Antibody

San Francisco-based biotechnology firm Vial has administered the first dose to a patient in a Phase 1b clinical study of its novel bispecific antibody, designed to treat mild-to-moderate asthma. The therapy targets both IL-13 and TSLP pathways, aiming to provide disease control through a potential twice-yearly dosing schedule.

The transition to patient trials follows the successful completion of a Phase 1a study involving five cohorts of healthy adult volunteers. During these initial tests, the drug was generally well tolerated across intravenous doses ranging from 15 mg to 800 mg. The pharmacokinetic profile observed in these healthy subjects suggests the antibody possesses the durability required for ultra-long-acting administration.

"Moving into patients is the defining step for the program," said Simon Burns, CEO of Vial. The company intends to demonstrate that dual blockade of IL-13 and TSLP can meaningfully improve key asthma biomarkers, specifically FeNO and FEV1. The randomized, double-blind Phase 1b study will evaluate safety and tolerability as primary endpoints, while also tracking secondary measures including lung function and inflammatory markers like TARC and blood eosinophils. Vial expects to share interim data from this study in the first half of 2027.
