Finland Welcomes Its First F-35A Fighter Jets to Rovaniemi

Two F-35A aircraft touched down in Rovaniemi on October 1, 2026, marking a shift for the Finnish Defence Forces. The arrival signals the start of 5th Generation operations in the Nordic region, intended to bolster national sovereignty and align Finland’s aerial capabilities with the evolving security architecture of the NATO alliance.

Major General Timo Herranen, Commander of the Finnish Air Force, emphasized that the aircraft’s ability to remain undetected while sharing data is a necessity for the region's security environment. The F-35 is intended to provide long-term deterrence, a sentiment echoed by OJ Sanchez, President of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, who noted that the platform serves as a critical link in the nation’s defense strategy.

Finland has now taken possession of 10 of its 64 ordered F-35A jets. While these two are permanently based at home, the remaining eight continue to serve as training assets at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas. The integration of this fleet is supported by an expanding industrial footprint, highlighted by the Finnish firm Patria, which has begun manufacturing forward fuselage components—a key contribution to the global supply chain that now sees 25% of the aircraft’s value produced within Europe.
