GomSpace Targets Next-Gen Satellite Comms with GOMX-5 Mission

Scheduled for launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission on October 1, the GOMX-5 CubeSat aims to push the boundaries of orbital connectivity. This ESA-supported project serves as a critical testbed for advanced communications and sensing technologies, building on the company's established flight heritage in maritime and air traffic surveillance.

GomSpace Targets Next-Gen Satellite Comms with GOMX-5 Mission

The 8U CubeSat platform is designed to validate operational concepts that could redefine future commercial and institutional satellite systems. Morten Bisgaard, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at GomSpace, describes the mission as a progression from the 2018 GOMX-4A and GOMX-4B flights, which proved that small satellites could reliably monitor the Arctic and Greenland regions. By integrating these new systems in orbit, the company seeks to generate the performance data necessary to scale its technology for broader customer applications.

Beyond communications, the mission aligns with the European Space Agency’s Zero Debris initiative. The satellite will test specific collision avoidance maneuvers and end-of-life disposal procedures, addressing the growing industry focus on sustainable space operations. From initial design through to integration and active mission control, GOMX-5 represents a full-lifecycle demonstration of GomSpace’s modular satellite capabilities.
