Fire Departments Launch National Recruitment Drive During Prevention Week

Since April, the IAFC initiative has attracted thousands of prospective volunteers nationwide, aiming to bolster a workforce where more than 60% of U.S. fire and EMS departments currently rely on volunteer labor. For many rural departments, that dependency climbs above 80%, making the recruitment of a new generation essential for maintaining emergency coverage.

Jason Caughey, a board member for the IAFC’s Volunteer & Combination Officers Section and Fire Chief of the Laramie County Fire Authority, emphasized the impact of direct engagement. He noted that a single interaction with the fire service often acts as a catalyst for individuals to step into a service role. To facilitate these connections during National Fire Prevention Week, participating stations from Vermont to Colorado are hosting open houses, live demonstrations, and training simulations throughout October. These events serve as a practical introduction to the profession, offering residents a look at the equipment and commitment required to protect their neighborhoods.
