Ethiopian Airlines Orders Ten Boeing Freighters to Boost Cargo Capacity

The purchase marks a significant expansion for the Addis Ababa-based carrier, which already operates 12 777 Freighters, two 767s, and four 737-800SF aircraft. By integrating the next-generation 777-8F, Ethiopian Airlines aims to leverage a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes, targeting improved fuel efficiency and lower operating costs per tonne. This acquisition follows the airline’s earlier commitment to eight 777-9 passenger jets, solidifying its status as the continent’s launch customer for the 777X family.

Group CEO Mesfin Tasew noted that the new aircraft will provide the flexibility required to meet rising global demand while enhancing supply chain connectivity. Boeing, represented by Senior Vice President Brad McMullen, highlighted the order as a testament to the deepening partnership between the manufacturer and the airline. The 777-8F is designed to retain operational commonality with existing 777 freighters, ensuring seamless integration into the carrier’s current network of over 70 cargo markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
