Commonwealth Fusion Systems Secures Massive HTS Tape Order from Fujikura

The massive order of 3 GA-m of HTS tape is earmarked for the company’s ARC power plant series, beginning with the grid-scale facility currently under development at the Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County, Virginia. To meet the volume demands of the project, Fujikura is expanding its manufacturing capacity, signaling a long-term commitment to the fusion sector that extends into the 2030s.

Bob Mumgaard, CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, noted that the move serves as a precursor to the commercial rollout that will follow the successful demonstration of the SPARC fusion machine. The HTS tape is essential for creating the intense magnetic fields required to confine plasma at 100 million degrees Celsius. By utilizing Fujikura’s proprietary IBAD process, these magnets can maintain high current-carrying performance while remaining compact, effectively lowering the capital cost of constructing future fusion reactors.
