Pennsylvania American Water Promotes Watershed Stewardship

As part of the American Water Works Association’s Source Water Protection Week, Pennsylvania American Water is emphasizing the critical link between environmental health and utility reliability. The company manages water services for 2.5 million residents, arguing that preventing contamination at the source is the most effective way to ensure long-term water safety.

Protecting rivers, lakes, and groundwater remains the utility's primary defense against rising treatment costs and supply risks. According to company president Justin Ladner, maintaining high water quality requires proactive risk assessment and constant collaboration with state and local environmental agencies to address emerging contaminants. The utility currently utilizes research laboratories to conduct nearly 1 million tests annually, deploying advanced filtration technology to meet or exceed federal quality standards.

Beyond technical operations, the company is urging the public to adopt sustainable habits to prevent runoff pollution. Program manager Kristi English notes that source protection is a collective responsibility, requiring community members to manage chemical applications, secure hazardous waste, and dispose of pharmaceuticals properly. These efforts are designed to keep pollutants out of storm drains and local waterways, reinforcing the infrastructure that supports the state’s largest water utility.
