Hubbell Trading Post Brings Diné Traditions to the American West

Organized by the nonprofit Western National Parks, the traveling exhibition moves beyond a standard retail experience. Each stop features live weaving demonstrations by Tonita Yazzie and educational sessions led by Diné trader Wallace James Jr. These presentations, scheduled daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., highlight the intricate techniques and generational knowledge required to create authentic Navajo textiles and silver jewelry. For James, whose personal history is deeply entwined with the site, the tour serves as a bridge between the public and the artists who sustain these traditions.

The series of events kicks off at Bandelier National Monument on October 10, 2026, followed by stops at White Sands National Park, Petroglyph National Monument, and various regional recreation areas. According to Marie Buck, President and CEO of Western National Parks, the goal is to foster genuine connections between visitors and the Indigenous artisans who continue these practices today. Proceeds from items purchased during the tour directly support these artists as well as the preservation efforts at the Hubbell Trading Post and 72 other national park sites managed in partnership with the National Park Service.
