QatarEnergy Extends LNG Force Majeure Through November

Six months into the maritime standoff at the Strait of Hormuz, QatarEnergy has pushed its force majeure on LNG shipments through the end of November. The extension reflects a deepening impasse in the U.S.-Iran conflict, effectively strangling one of the world’s most critical energy transit corridors and disrupting global supply chains.

The state-owned energy giant notified customers across Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India of the continued suspension, while Italian supplier Edison faces delays extending into early December. This latest move underscores the persistent volatility in the region, where LNG export volumes have cratered by 96% since the onset of hostilities. Recent figures from ICIS reveal that Qatar managed only 18 shipments in the last six months, a stark drop from the 509 cargoes recorded during the same period last year.

While some energy companies have attempted ship-to-ship transfers offshore Oman to bypass the blocked chokepoint, these measures remain insufficient. Unlike crude oil, which has been successfully rerouted through creative shuttle-shipping, the technical complexities of liquefied natural gas make large-scale diversion nearly impossible. With $24 billion in lost sales already accounted for, the ongoing blockade continues to tighten the squeeze on European and Asian markets reliant on Qatari output.
