The integration allows companies already using Avalara to maintain their existing tax logic without shifting platforms or adding manual review steps. As invoices circulate through the Medius approval cycle, the system automatically recalculates vendor-charged tax against Avalara’s engine. This shift addresses a persistent pain point: while many firms have long-established tax determination engines, the verification often occurs only after payment, turning potential compliance errors into difficult accounting corrections.
Gary Hall, Chief Product Officer at Medius, noted that the move represents a shift in sequence rather than a change in technology. By moving the check upstream, the company aims to eliminate the administrative burden of recovering incorrectly paid taxes. For the more than 250 mutual customers already utilizing both platforms, the integration functions as a native extension of their current AP workflow.
This development follows Medius’ recent integration with Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, signaling a broader strategy to connect critical financial systems directly into the AP automation environment. Greg Chapman, General Manager of AvaTax at Avalara, emphasized that the goal is to provide accurate determination at the exact moment financial decisions are finalized. Medius is currently demonstrating these capabilities at the Avalara CRUSH 2026 conference in Fort Lauderdale.
