Sun Life to redeem $500 million in subordinated debentures

Sun Life Financial Inc. plans to clear $500 million in debt by redeeming its Series 2021-1 subordinated unsecured debentures on November 18, 2026. The move marks the exercise of the company's option to settle the 2.46% fixed-to-floating rate instruments using its existing cash reserves and liquid assets.

The redemption price will include the full principal amount of the debentures plus any accrued and unpaid interest up to the November 18 cutoff. Once that date passes, interest accrual on the securities will cease, and holders will be restricted to collecting the redemption payout as stipulated in the original trust indenture.

Sun Life intends to issue formal notice to all affected holders in alignment with the governing terms of the debt. The company, which manages $1.70 trillion in total assets as of June 30, 2026, operates across 15 international markets including Canada, the United States, and several nations throughout Asia.
