UN Forum Pushes for Private Sector Role in Global Energy Transition

With the 1.5°C climate target slipping from reach, UN Secretary-General António Guterres convened over 100 CEOs and world leaders in New York to bridge the divide between corporate ambition and the grid infrastructure required to deliver a secure, clean energy future for developing and emerging economies.

UN Forum Pushes for Private Sector Role in Global Energy Transition

The 2026 UN Private Sector Forum centered on the disconnect between the private sector's appetite for renewables and the regulatory hurdles stalling actual deployment. While falling technology costs have made clean energy an attractive investment, participants identified persistent bottlenecks: inadequate transmission grids, unpredictable permitting processes, and financing risks in developing markets. Guterres urged executives to leverage their supply chains and purchasing power to accelerate the shift, emphasizing that capital alone cannot bypass systemic infrastructure deficits.

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO of the UN Global Compact, noted that the transition requires moving beyond high-level pledges toward concrete partnerships. The dialogue focused heavily on risk-sharing mechanisms—such as blended finance—to unlock private capital for projects currently deemed too risky for traditional investment. Beyond climate mitigation, leaders framed the shift as a matter of economic survival, arguing that diversified, clean energy systems are essential to navigating current geopolitical disruptions and stabilizing global supply chains. The forum concluded with a push for governments to provide more consistent regulatory signals to help businesses commit long-term capital to the energy grid of the future.
