The core appeal of space-based solar lies in its constant access to sunlight, allowing for a dispatchable energy source that traditional ground-based panels cannot match. By transmitting energy via microwave or laser beams, these satellites could theoretically supply power to specific grids in real time. Overview Energy has already secured a significant agreement with Meta to provide up to 1 gigawatt of power, a capacity comparable to a standard nuclear reactor.
However, the path to commercial viability remains steep. While the technology promises to circumvent the massive land requirements that often trigger local opposition to terrestrial wind and solar farms, economic hurdles persist. Stanford physicist Amory Lovins noted that while the engineering might prove successful, the cost of space-based delivery remains difficult to justify against cheaper alternatives like nuclear or geothermal energy. Projections suggest that even if initial deployments succeed, the technology may not achieve true cost parity with existing energy sources until at least 2040.
