The study, published in Artificial Intelligence in Education, surveyed 491 non-traditional undergraduate students in online general education courses. Among the participants, 212 reported using tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Gemini. The data showed no significant correlation between AI usage and students facing time pressures from work or family, nor with those lacking confidence in foundational subjects like reading, writing, or mathematics.
Instead, researchers identified a clear link between high academic achievement and AI integration. Of the students who utilized GenAI, 91.1% held a GPA of 3.0 or higher, with nearly 69% earning a 4.0 in the specific courses surveyed. Lead author Jessica Sylvester noted that these findings suggest AI is being used as a strategic 'thinking partner' for brainstorming and clarifying complex concepts, rather than merely as a shortcut for productivity.
While the authors emphasize that their cross-sectional, correlational findings do not prove a causal relationship between AI use and grades, the results challenge institutions to move beyond simple restrictions. The research team advocates for a curriculum shift toward AI literacy, encouraging students to develop the critical judgment and ethical awareness necessary to navigate the technology as it continues to evolve in academic settings.
